What version does the Ipod touch start out as once you buy it?

I plan on getting an Ipod Touch and want to upgrade it. What version does it start as, 2.0? It need to know. Also, if you know any places to get a good Ipod Touch for a lower price please mention it also!
No Ebay please.

The iPod Touch 2G starts out with 2.2 firmware. Buying your iPod directly from Apple or Best Buy is always reliable, but you could consider Circuit City. Since they are slowly going bankrupt and closing down, you may find some discounts.
